Robert Lane "Bob" Saget (May 17, 1956 - January 9, 2022 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was an actor, comedian, and television host. He is the actor who played the role of Danny Tanner on the ABC series, Full House and hosted America's Funniest Home Videos from 1989 to 1997. From 2005 to 2014, he provided the voice of the future-Ted Mosby on the CBS comedy series, How I Met Your Mother.
Career[]
Saget started performing stand-up comedy and has done a number of national tours. In 1987, he became the co-host of the CBS television show, The Morning Program. The show received negative reviews and was canceled after a month. After that, Saget went to star on Full House.
During his time on Full House, Saget was the host of ABC's America's Funniest Home Videos from 1989 to 1997. Preceding his final episode, six of his fellow Full House alumni co-stars made guest appearances (John Stamos, Dave Coulier, Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, Lori Loughlin, and Andrea Barber), and they even tried their hand at some of his closing catchphrases.[1] He made a special guest appearance on the show in 2009 to celebrate its 20th anniversary and even did his voice interjections (as heard in the clips).
In 1992, he had a cameo role in the Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen TV movie To Grandmother's House We Go, playing the host of the Win-O-Lotto game show.
After Full House ended, Bob continued to do various projects, including directing the 1996 ABC TV movie, For Hope which was inspired by the real-life story of his sister, Gay Saget, who passed away from scleroderma. He also directed his first feature film, Dirty Work, in 1998. During that same year, Bob portrayed the role of a cocaine addict in the movie, Half Baked.
In 2001, Saget starred on the WB series, Raising Dad, where he portrayed the role of a widowed dad raising two daughters on his own. The show was canceled after one season. Bob has guest-starred on TV shows such as Huff, Listen Up, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Law & Order: LA.
In 2004, he reunited with Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen in their final movie New York Minute, where he played himself.
From 2006 to 2008, he was the host of the NBC game show 1 vs. 100.
In April 2009, Saget starred on another short-lived ABC series, Surviving Suburbia. The show was canceled by August of that same year due to low ratings. Bob was also the director, writer, producer, and voice on the 2007 direct-to-video movie, Farce of the Penguins.
In April 2017, following Don Rickles' passing, he and John Stamos stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live for a tribute.[2]
Stand-up comedy[]

In his book Dirty Daddy: The Chronicles of a Family Man Turned Filthy Comedian (2014), he mentions that he started doing stand-up comedy at the age of 17. His first talk show appearance was in 1981 on The Merv Griffin Show. He is known for his very vulgar sense of humor. While on the set of Full House, he would often say inappropriate things on set in front of Candace Cameron, Jodie Sweetin, and the Olsen twins. Some of the parents got angry with him about this, and there came a point where Bob had to be more careful about what he said, especially in front of the kids. His TV daughters have stated in interviews that they vividly remember his wild sense of humor. After the series ended, sometimes he has toured on the stand-up circuit with co-star Dave Coulier (who he knew years before the show began). He frequently parodies his "Danny Tanner" character in his stand-up routine.
Personal life[]
Saget was married to Sherri Kramer from May 1982 to November 1997. Together, they have three daughters: twins Aubrey and Lara (born in 1989) and Jennifer (born in 1992).
Saget is the son of Dolly (who died in 2014) and Benjamin M. Saget (who died in 2007). He had two other siblings who died in childbirth. His sister, Andrea, died of an aneurysm at age 34. His sister, Gay died of scleroderma at the age of 47. Bob is a board member of the Scleroderma Research Foundation.
Death[]
On January 9, 2022, Saget was found unresponsive in his hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando. He had just begun a comedy tour. A cause of death was not determined at the time, but the chief medical examiner found "no evidence of drug use or foul play."[3] On February 9, 2022, the autopsy report said that Saget had blunt head trauma from an accidental blow to the back of his head, and subsequently died from the resulting injuries in his sleep.[4] He had checked back into his hotel room at 2:17 am and was found unresponsive at 3:42 am. While foul play and drugs were indeed ruled out, some medical experts suggest he may have slipped on the marble tile in the hotel bathroom after coming out of the shower. The room itself was in orderly condition at the time, from towels folded on the bathtub to his bed being made. Even his devices and glasses were still sitting near the bathroom sink.[5] However, some fans still remain skeptical.[6]
He leaves behind his wife of three years, Kelly Rizzo, who is known for being the creator and host of Eat Travel Rock TV.
Tributes[]
In San Francisco, fans stopped by the iconic house to pay tribute; One fan even went so far as to leave a Budweiser pack for Saget himself and a loaf of white bread for his role as Danny.[7][8]
Many celebrities took to social media (Twitter, Instagram, etc.) to give tribute to Bob. Besides his Full House co-stars (and creator Jeff Franklin, whose Instagram photo was tagged with the official accounts of the entire cast, with the exceptions of Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen and Lori Loughlin), other notables (most of whom knew him) include: Kate Beckinsale, Jim Carrey, Penelope Cruz, Billy Crystal, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kat Dennings, Whoopi Goldberg, Gilbert Gottfried, Norman Lear, Steve Martin, John Mayer, Henry Winkler, as well as succeeding hosts of America's Funniest Home Videos, Daisy Fuentes, John Fugelsang, Tom Bergeron and Alfonso Ribiero.
In fact, Gilbert's Twitter tribute featured a photo of himself, Bob, and fellow comedian Louie Anderson taking a selfie (Louie died on January 21, while Gilbert died on April 12).[9]
ABC News broke the sad news at the end of that week's AFV episode. And at the beginning of the following Sunday's episode, the show gave a special tribute to him. The tribute was repeated on June 25.
On the Jimmy Kimmel Show (another ABC show), before the episode began, Kimmel gave a tearful tribute to Bob.[10] In addition, Steve Harvey, who was scheduled to promote his new weekly primetime show Judge Steve Harvey, offered a tribute of his own (Harvey starred in a short-lived sitcom called Me and the Boys which followed Full House on Tuesdays during the 1994-95 season).[11]
When fellow sitcom star Betty White died (ten days before he did), he paid tribute to her on his Instagram.[12]
His funeral, on Friday, January 14, was attended by his Full House and Fuller House cast mates, with John Stamos and Dave Coulier as pallbearers.
